This last November, Americans became the main driver for Golden Visa, with approvals rising from 6 in the spring to 20. Chinese investors – the traditional main investor group – dropped to second place with 19 Golden Visa approvals.
Of the 781 approved main applications so far in 2021, 256 have been Chinese, 87 have been Americans, 59 Brazilian, 55 Russian, 29 Turks and 28 South African. This is in stark contrast to 2020 where Americans were much further down the list.
In fact, 2021 has set new records for American interest in Golden Visa, with 87 American main applicants having been approved thus far this year compared to 75 in 2020, whilst US applicants’ share of the program overall has reached 11.1% this year, almost twice the proportion registered in 2020 (in 2019, American applicants constituted only 5.2% overall).
Additionally, Golden Visa investors are increasingly choosing alternative asset options to real estate, with fund options rising to 39% of the market share from 17% just three years ago.
